The Indian hospitality industry is mourning the loss of one of its most transformative leaders. Param Kannampilly, Chairman and Managing Director of Concept Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. and the visionary founder of The Fern Hotels & Resorts, passed away on March 30, 2026. He was 76.

Kannampilly, widely regarded as the “architect of sustainable luxury” in India, died peacefully in Mumbai surrounded by his family. His passing marks the end of a career spanning over five decades—a tenure defined by a radical shift in how the Indian hotel sector balances profitability with environmental stewardship.

The “Ecotel” Revolutionary

Long before “ESG” became a boardroom staple, Kannampilly was the primary advocate for the Ecotel certification in India. While the industry in the 1990s remained focused on traditional opulence, Kannampilly identified a critical gap: the heavy environmental footprint of luxury travel.

Through Concept Hospitality, he launched The Fern Hotels & Resorts, a brand that proved sustainability was not a niche luxury but a viable, scalable business model. Under his leadership, the group expanded its footprint across India, Nepal, and the Seychelles, consistently outperforming traditional competitors by integrating:

  • Triple Bottom Line Accounting: Focusing equally on social, environmental, and financial performance.

  • Operational Efficiency: Implementing advanced water recycling, zero-waste-to-landfill policies, and renewable energy long before they were industry standards.

A Legacy of Quiet Leadership

In an industry often defined by grandiosity, Kannampilly was known for his “quiet strength” and humility. He was a mentor to a generation of General Managers and a constant fixture at industry forums, where he pushed for more ethical sourcing and community-driven tourism. “He didn’t just build hotels; he built a philosophy,” said a senior executive from the Hotel Association of India. “Param demonstrated that being ‘green’ was not a compromise on guest comfort, but an enhancement of it.”

Strategic Continuity

The passing of Kannampilly leaves a significant void in the leadership of Concept Hospitality, though the group remains on a strong growth trajectory. The company recently announced major expansions and collaborations, including a milestone project in Powai. His son, Suhail Kannampilly, who serves as Managing Director, is expected to continue the firm’s commitment to his father’s “Green” DNA.
