On November 23rd, 2023, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Development Authority (APEDA), operating under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, marked National Cashew Day by orchestrating the shipment of Cashew Nuts to Bangladesh, Qatar, Malaysia, and the USA. This move, aimed at promoting cashew exports, holds significance as Bangladesh is set to receive its inaugural shipment of Cashew Nuts from the state of Odisha.
India, following Côte d’Ivoire, is the second-largest producer and exporter of Cashew Nuts globally, boasting a share exceeding 15%. The top export destinations for Indian Cashew Nuts are currently the UAE, the Netherlands, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. Key cashew-producing states in India include Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh (Visakhapatnam), Odisha, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
APEDA, in line with its commitment to expanding market horizons, is actively exploring new international markets such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Spain, Kuwait, Qatar, the USA, and various European countries.
In celebration of National Cashew Day, APEDA, in collaboration with its Regional Offices and stakeholders, organized programs across seven states. These events featured interactive sessions, networking opportunities, knowledge-sharing forums, and discussions on industry trends and challenges. Mr. Abhishek Dev, Chairman of APEDA, addressed participants at the event, emphasizing the significance of meaningful discussions on growth trends, production, export strategies, and challenges faced by the cashew sector.
Chairman Dev applauded the efforts of farmers, processors, and exporters, attributing the industry’s growth to their dedication. He stated, “Our dedicated farmers have played a crucial role in contributing to the increased production of cashews. Their commitment to quality and sustainable farming practices has not only elevated the industry standards but has also positioned us as key players in the global market.”
As APEDA continues to engage with stakeholders in the Cashew Nut sector, it aims to address various challenges, including modernization of processing facilities, logistics, maintaining quality standards, and navigating international competition. Future initiatives may involve intervention in the automation of the cashew industry, professional training, registration of processing units, and the establishment of a traceability system. APEDA remains dedicated to exploring innovative methods, leveraging technology, and strengthening trade relations to ensure that Indian cashew products reach global markets effectively.
