New Delhi, November 2022: In order to raise awareness and share key insights on the benefits of cranberry juice in preventing Helicobacter pylori infection and promoting gut health, the India Office of the US Cranberry Marketing Commission has invited its leading enterologist, and gastroenterologist, We held a series of insightful interactive sessions with an endocrinologist. in three Indian cities.

The session was led by Dr. Jignesh Gandhi (Senior Consultant, Department of General and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai), Dr. Amy B. Howell (Ph.D. Associate Research Scientist Marucci Center for Blueberry Cranberry Research Rutgers University, USA), and Mr. Sumit Saran, US Cranberry Marketing Committee – India Representative.

The sessions were moderated by senior local physicians from each city. Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Senior Consultant, Department of General and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai, discusses the significant results of cranberry in preventing H. pylori infection, stating: Economy.

This bacterium impairs the protective layer of the gastric mucosa and causes intestinal dysbiosis that causes a variety of clinical problems. These bacteria can develop from chronic acid problems to serious problems like stomach cancer in the long run if not monitored regularly. About 60% of the Indian population is affected by H. Pylori bacteria, of which about 3n suffer from active ulcer disease, some cause surgical complications, and a small percentage gastric cancer. There is a lifetime risk of developing the disease. About 50,000 patients seek treatment for Helicobacter pylori with 2 weeks of her triple therapy as a standard of care. The problems are the long duration of treatment, poor patient compliance, leading to drug resistance, and the takeover of Helicobacter pylori, a difficult-to-treat infection. Due to the poor socioeconomic status and poor patient compliance in our country, we are still far from eradicating this infection.

“I had the opportunity to interact personally with the international leaders of this research, as well as some academic reflection. In a country like India, where more than 60% of people with Helicobacter pylori infection are infected, if a daily intake of cranberry juice alone could control 20% of infections and provide a standard of care, it would be a paradigm shift in coping strategies. will connect. This is an under-reported illness. If this study were applied to our country, it would not only have an impact on health care economics but also reduce the possible incidence of gastric cancer in this large and diverse population” Gandhi added.

On this occasion, Dr. Amy Howell, Associate Research Scientist, Maruti Blueberry Cranberry Research Center, Rutgers University, USA said “The proanthocyanidins or ‘PAC’ compounds found in cranberries have several health benefits, including pylori. It is very effective in suppressing bacterial infections. Several types of studies have shown that the anti-adhesive properties of PAC prevent bacteria from sticking to the gut and prevent the first stage of infection. Cranberry juice does not kill bacteria, so patients do not develop resistance as often happens with antibiotics. Natural gut microbes are preserved. This is a very good reason why India is adopting this kind of nutritional approach to treat these infections”. Dr. Howell further adds “Regular consumption of 100% cranberry juice is a complementary approach to controlling H. pylori infections and should not be considered a substitute or substitute for antibiotics”.

Sumit Saran, Head of India for Cranberry USA, said of the Indian market: “Consumption is increasing rapidly as consumers become aware of cranberry’s flavor and health benefits. US cranberries are commonly available in India in dry or juice form. Easy to buy from major e-commerce platforms or major retailers nationwide”.
